OsychrisFarms partners with other farmers to make animal feeds. Cassava peels, leaves and palm leaves are the most common parts of used as animal feed by farmers. It contains quite high crude protein up to 25 % on dry matter (DM) basis, a nutrient which is generally deficient in feeds for livestock in the tropics. Thus, it can potentially be used as a protein source for livestock.
Cassava foliage (leaves and stem), peels and particularly the root; fresh, dried or in silage form; alone or mixed with other feed is used in feeding different species of animals. Dried fine cassava mash can be fed to poultry, fish, and pigs, while the coarser mash is suitable for cattle, sheep and goats, and pigs. The pilot process we developed converts three tonnes of fresh peel into one tonne of feed.
Cassava peels can be used for feeding poultry after sun drying, so processed peels contain HCN levels that are acceptable for poultry
Results obtained in this study have shown that cassava peel meal yielded significance growth performance of Oreochromis niloticus fish fingerlings at an inclusion level of 25% when substituted for maize in the fish diet.
